The world’s oldest pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, has introduced a new version of a popular arthritis drug, Celebrex, to the market that has been a top-selling prescription drug in the United States for more than 10 years.
“We are very pleased to introduce the new version of Celebrex,” says David Heffner, who has co-marketed the drug with Pfizer and other drugmakers in the United States. The company is also testing it to see if it can be marketed as a heart drug.
Celebrex, which Pfizer has sold for over $200 million since its patent expired in 1992, is a type of anti-inflammatory drug. It works by blocking the production of certain chemicals in the body that cause inflammation and pain. The drug is commonly prescribed to treat arthritis, which can affect joints, muscles, and tendons.
It can also be used to reduce fever, a common symptom of arthritis. The drug is also widely available over the counter, but it is expensive and is not covered by insurance.
“We will not be able to offer this medication for less than $100,000,” Heffner says. “The cost is a significant barrier. We will be working with the insurance companies to try and make the drug affordable for people without insurance coverage.”
The new drug is available as a generic, and the price of the generic drug will be the same as in the United States. Pfizer is expected to sell the drug for about $100 million in the first two years of marketing.
The drug was introduced as a generic after its patent expired in 1992, and it is available as a brand-name drug under a different name, called COX-2. The drug is still sold under the generic name Celebrex, which Pfizer has said is a safer, more convenient, and cheaper way to treat arthritis.

“I’ve been trying to do a lot of things to get to the bottom of this,” he says. “I’ve taken all kinds of things in the past, and they’re all different.”
He has also done some research on the risks of using the drug.
“We’ve been working with the manufacturers and looking at everything to get to the bottom of the risks and be in a better position to be able to get that drug,” he says. “If the drug is not approved for use in the United States, then that’s fine.”
